100 Pipers Finest, 1990, 40%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

82 / 100

The light palate and medium texture are the main points of interest for me here. Oak appears on both nose and palate, while the sweetness moves from hints of nuts and caramel in the aroma to a subtler sweetness in the flavour. Smoke is slight on the nose, a hint on the palate, and remains subtle alongside sweet nuttiness in the finish. That progression gives the blend a clear shape without making any one note dominant. I like the idea of smoothness carrying the oak and sweetness, with smoke providing a gentle counterpoint. Those who prefer a stronger smoky character might want more from it, but the restrained balance has its own appeal.
