Auchentoshan 12 Year Old, Bourbon & Sherry Cask, 43%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

87 / 100

Sweet pastry and citrus make for an inviting opening, with toasted almonds adding a quieter note. The palate stays sweet, but hazelnut and oak spices give the vanilla and bright citrus something to work against. The finish is the part that most suits my taste: gingery and slightly dry, with cocoa powder, lingering nuttiness and lengthy oak. It has enough sweetness to connect with the earlier notes, yet ends with a different emphasis. That sustained, drier close is more compelling to me than any single fruit note. The contrast feels measured rather than abrupt, and gives this whisky a clear sense of direction from opening to finish.
