The Rioja cask finish sounds like a lovely fit for the fruitier side of Islay: sweet red grapes and chocolate raisins bring plenty of character alongside cloves and toasted oak. The sea spray mist on the finish is the detail that really catches my attention, adding a coastal thread without taking over the warmer, spiced notes. A relaxed, nicely balanced-sounding combination, with enough going on to keep the fruit and oak interesting.
