I tend to welcome oak when it gives structure rather than taking over. Here, oak tannins sit alongside dried fruits and a distinct Amontillado influence on a powerful palate. That pairing appeals to me, though it raises a question: will the oak leave enough room for the subtler sherry, almonds and vanilla on the nose? The long, pleasantly dry finish, with nutty and slightly spicy nuances, sounds in keeping with the firmer palate. I like the contrast between those quieter opening notes and the stronger oak character. Still, someone who prefers oak to stay in the background may find this less appealing than I do.
