There’s a lot to enjoy in the contrast here: butterscotch and dried fruit meet brighter citrus, while the palate’s baking spices and slight bitterness keep the sweetness from taking over. The medium-to-long finish brings sherry, oak and chocolate, with a little smoke in the mix. For a 17-year-old sherry-cask single malt, that gives the stated character both richness and some sharper edges. A pleasingly layered set of flavours, rather than sweetness all the way through.
