Haig Clubman, Bourbon Cask, 2016, 40%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

81 / 100

Vanilla runs from the nose through to the finish, giving this whisky a clear thread of sweetness. Toffee on the nose and creamy cereal grains on the palate add to that impression, while green apple and sweet spices offer some contrast. That balance suits my preference for vanilla and grain flavours without making the whole character sound uniform. The 40% ABV is useful context, though the flavour notes say more about its character than the number does. My reservation is the soft finish: its light oak spice sounds agreeable, but a generally short-to-medium length may leave less to consider after the sweeter palate. Overall, it’s a coherent, gently varied whisky.
