McConnell's No Reserve 5 Year Old, Bourbon Cask, 42%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

84 / 100

Vanilla sweetness and butterscotch have some welcome company here: pears, citrus and pepper spice keep the character from reading as simply sweet. The gentle spicy warmth carries that balance into the finish, though the noted mild burn suggests it is not entirely soft-edged. That sweet-and-spicy contrast is the most appealing part for me, with enough fruit and floral character in the mix to make the profile feel rounded rather than one-note.
