New Riff Single Barrel Rye 4 Year Old, New Oak Cask, Cask #16-9955, 52.45%

88 / 100

The fruit keeps this from reading as spice alone: peach, apricot and ripe red plums on the nose carry into red fruit and stone fruit on the palate, alongside orange oil. That gives the black pepper, cinnamon and ginger a clear counterweight, with vanilla and brown sugar adding a sweeter thread. The finish shifts toward espresso and roasted grains, with pepper building. I like that fruit-and-spice balance; the close sounds more assertive than fruit-led, so this seems best suited to someone who enjoys layered rye character rather than a softer, purely fruity style.
