Rock Oyster Small Batch Release Cask Strength, American Oak Cask, Batch No. 2, Douglas Laing, 56.1%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

87 / 100

Rock Oyster is identified as a Scottish Islands blended malt, and this Batch No. 2 release is labelled cask strength at 56.1%, in an American oak cask. The notes make its character clear: citrus and coastal salt meet peat smoke, then the palate turns notably briny, chilli-hot and medicinal. That is a forceful combination, though the tart apple and soft spice in the finish give it some lift. I find the contrast more appealing than smoke alone; this seems suited to someone who enjoys a distinctly maritime, peated style.
