Teaninich The Manager's Dram 17 Year Old, Refill Oak Cask, 2001, 58.3%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

88 / 100

There’s a lively contrast here: sweet sugar waffles, honey and vanilla on the nose give way to a powerful palate with ginger, pepper and fiery heat. The subtle smoke and waxy apple and pear add interest without taking over. I like that the finish brings coffee bitterness alongside vanilla, fresh oak and leafy herbs; it sounds more layered than simply sweet. The notes point to a bold, complex character, though the heat and dryness may be a less comfortable fit for anyone seeking an especially gentle dram.
