Yamazaki 1996 Anniversary Bottling 12 Year Old, Sherry Cask, Cask No. AX 70012, 2009, 60%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

86 / 100

The heavy red gum raisins and sherry-like notes point to a rich, focused style, with a sweet, full-bodied palate carrying that weight through. I like the contrast on the finish: light smoke and sandalwood alongside seasoned oak and a firm grip. At 60% ABV, this is not the soft, easygoing direction I usually gravitate toward, but the flavour details suggest enough depth and balance to make the contrast appealing rather than simple sweetness.
