Yokai The Tengu 9 Year Old, 69.3%

A Maltiply member's tasting notes and whisky impression.

86 / 100

Oak is the thread running through this one: perfumed on the nose, alongside cherry and dark fruits on the palate, then lingering with fruit in the finish. Candied orange peel and nougat give the opening a sweet, bright edge, while the 69.3% strength and noted barrel-proof warmth point to a forceful style rather than an easygoing one. I like how the oak stays present across the notes, though the warmth may take centre stage for some. A lively, fruit-led bourbon with a firm oak backbone.
