Description

Situated in the Firth of Clyde, the island of Arran was once a hotbed of illicit distillation and smuggling. That all changed in 1995 when the Arran distillery at Lochranza started production. The Venables is an 18 year old private cask matured in an Oak Cask and expertly crafted by James Mactaggart.

The baked peaches and caramelised orange sound warmly rich, with dark chocolate adding a deeper edge. The dried fruit and polished oak on the finish give it a satisfying, steady feel.

There’s an inviting sweetness here, with peaches and vanilla leading into darker chocolate and dried fruit. The full-bodied palate and 51.9% strength suggest a fairly rich style, but the gentle spice keeps it approachable.

Orchard fruit and syrupy peaches set up a fruit thread that continues as baked peaches on the palate, then dried fruits in the finish. That shift appeals to me more than a single sweetness carried straight through. The palate is described as rich and full-bodied, with dark chocolate and gentle spice adding contrast to the fruit. Toasted oak on the nose gives way to polished oak in the long finish, where lingering sherry richness and a touch of black pepper bring a different emphasis. A hint of sea salt on the nose offers a small counterpoint to the sweetness. The full-bodied texture is the main draw for my taste, while the progression from orchard fruit to dried fruit gives the flavours room to develop.

The appeal here is the way sweet orchard fruit and syrupy peach meet toasted oak and a hint of sea salt on the nose. On the palate, caramelised orange and baked peaches sit alongside dark chocolate and dried fruit, giving the fruit a richer, darker counterpoint. The finish is described as long, with sherry richness, polished oak and a little pepper and citrus. A substantial, fruit-led direction; the tea and herbal notes I tend to seek aren’t part of the documented character.
