Description

Amrut Portonova is an unpeated Indian single malt whisky, known for its unique and complex maturation process. It is initially matured in a combination of new American oak and ex-bourbon barrels, then transferred to once-used port pipes imported from Portugal, and finally returned to ex-bourbon casks for a final rest. This elaborate aging regime imparts remarkable complexity and depth. The whisky is aptly named Portonova, after Parangipettai (Portonovo), a town on the east coast of India that was historically under Portuguese control. It is bottled at a robust cask strength of 62.1% ABV and is non-chillfiltered.

Nose
Rich and inviting, with notes of raisin, dark berries, grape, and decadent dark chocolate, complemented by hints of toasted coconut, subtle caramel, pancake syrup, and dry malt. It can also present as a thick pudding of fruit and caramel, with a slightly over-oaked soup and burnt apple pie.
Palate
Intense and fruity, featuring tropical fruits, redcurrant jelly, baked bananas, and cinnamon. It offers a luscious mouthfeel with dark chocolate and dark fruits, along with new flavors like papaya and kiwi. A spicy kick of allspice and cinnamon is also present, interwoven with caramel and an oaky saltiness.
Finish
Long and fruity, with hints of cranberry and creamy toffee. It has a slow fade-out of fruity notes, leaving a touch of bitter coffee, massive oak, and a cocoa hue, eventually revealing muscovado sugars.
