Description

A collection of forty-two different whiskies from the length and breadth of Scotland, selected and bottled by Livingstone in partnership with Elixir Distillers. Each whisky represents a character from the Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, with illustrations by Sir Quentin Blake and character notes by Dave Broom. The First Witch is one of four smoky whiskies in The Witches series. It is a 19-year-old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured in Pedro Ximenez butts, and bottled at 51.7% ABV. Limited to 1800 bottles globally.

Palate: Pure sweet peat. Dates wrapped in smoky bacon, herbal honeys, black pepper, and burnt orange all wrapped in a thick layer of peat smoke. Notes of wool, smoked oysters, and iodine emerge over time.
Finish: Tarry and peppery with dried fruit, dark chocolate and drying oak.

The peat smoke is a clear part of the story here, with smoky bacon and marine notes balanced by dried fruit. That mix sounds right up my alley.

The shift from fruit toward a drier, darker finish is what interests me here. Juicy oranges, plum tart and sultanas share the nose with seaweed and salt. On the palate, sweet peat sits alongside dates wrapped in smoky bacon and black pepper, with the peat smoke remaining prominent. The finish brings tarry and peppery notes together with dried fruit, dark chocolate and drying oak. That combination suits my preference for oak and spice, while the fruit gives the darker notes some contrast. The finish length is not specified, so I would put more weight on that drying character than on any expectation of how long it lasts. A quietly appealing balance of sweetness, smoke and oak.
