Description
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Isle of Arran was home to over fifty illicit whisky distilleries. Barley yields grew following improved agricultural methods, but due to the island's poor infrastructure it was difficult to bring it to market. The logical solution was to distil whisky from the excess barley. The Excise Act of 1823 led to a great decrease in illegal distillation. A legal distillery, Lagg, opened in 1825 but closed in 1840, leaving the island without whisky production for over 150 years. The Arran Distillery was founded in 1995 in Lochranza, bringing whisky back to the island. This Arran 10 Years Old Anniversary 1995-2005 is a limited edition bottling released in 2005 to celebrate the distillery's 10th anniversary, distilled on Arran's first day of production in 1995. It was matured in sherry butts and limited to 1,200 bottles.
