Description

This is one of three bottlings of Ballechin in The Spongetopia Trilogy from Decadent Drinks. A small (once Scotland's smallest) distillery in Perthshire that began production in 1837. It is today owned by the independent bottler-turned-distiller, Signatory Vintage, who have placed a renewed focus on its single malt brands, introducing the heavily peated Ballechin in 2006. The Spongetopia Trilogy explores three possible 'Sponge-themed' dystopian futures and presents them as old school pulp sci-fi novels with their respective 'first paragraphs' on the rear labels. This particular bottling, Edition No.36A, was matured full term in a first fill bourbon barrel.

Nose
Smoked herbal tea, barnyard peat (turned hay, leather saddles, barn fire), earthiness (gravels, putties), lamp oil, first aid materials, menthol imbued Chantilly cream. Reduction brings golden grains, soot, rubber.
Palate
Compact and intensive. Balsamic, bitumen, cold cream, floor cleaner, BBQ sauce, chiselled minerality (limestone cliffs, loam sand), chopped herbs, Vicks Vapor Rub, mentholated Chantilly. With water: ash, strawberry forward mixed salad, wood lacquer, burnt electrical boards.
Finish
Long, tarry, medicinal with fading sharp minerality. The distillate sings loudly.
