Description
The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood is a single malt Scotch whisky matured in two distinct casks. It is first aged in traditional whisky oak casks (ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads) and then finished for an additional nine months in European oak sherry casks (ex-Oloroso sherry butts). This process, pioneered by Malt Master David C. Stewart, imparts a complex yet rich and smooth taste, with the traditional casks mellowing the spirit and adding vanilla spiciness, while the sherry wood brings depth and fruity, honeyed notes. The whisky is then married in large oak vessels called 'tuns' for 3-4 months. The Balvenie distillery, located in Dufftown, Speyside, is known for its traditional whisky-making techniques, including growing its own barley and operating its own malting floor.
