Description

Built by the Grant family in Dufftown, and situated next door to sister distillery Glenfiddich, Balvenie is at the heart of Grant's range of blends. Despite their proximity and shared water source, the style of spirit produced by the pair are quite different, with Balvenie producing a sweeter, more honeyed and very lightly peated new make spirit. It wasn't until 1990, when Kininvie distillery was built, that Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 2 was created using 32 hand-selected casks, including 23 American oak casks and 9 European oak Sherry casks, married together for several months in Tun 1509 before bottling at 50.3% ABV.

Maltiply Tasting Profile
Nose
Strawberries and vanilla ice-cream, served with biscuits, dried fruits and a glass of fine sherry on the side. Luscious with aromas of honey, orange peel, sweet oak vanilla and delicate ginger spiciness.
Palate
More sherried to taste, with fruitier and drier notes. Caramel and honey, with a slight bitter or burnt edge. Richly sweet, combining elegant honey with tangy citrus and gentle vanilla, overlain with subtle notes of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg.
Finish
Medium length. Honey changes into maple syrup, with sweetness becoming darker. Relatively heavy finish. Smooth finish with lingering spice and citrus elements. Stewed pear, raisins and a little liquorice, fading mature oak spice.

The contrast between the fruitier, sweeter nose and the drier, more sherried palate gives this whisky some welcome movement. Strawberries, biscuits and dried fruits lead into caramel and honey, while the slight bitter or burnt edge keeps the sweetness from feeling too simple. The finish carries that shift into darker maple syrup, with stewed pear and lingering spice. A richly layered character, with the fruit and spice doing more than simply adding sweetness.

The medium-length finish gives this a nice little second act: honey darkens toward maple syrup, while spice and citrus linger. That gentle shift is the bit I like most; it keeps the sweetness from feeling one-note.
