Description
A historic malt distillery located in the Highland region of Scotland. Since 1989 it has been Japanese-owned as part of the Asahi Group. Although it only produces single malt today, the distillery dabbled in grain whisky production from 1955 to 1984, even producing rare examples of single blends. Situated at the base of Britain's tallest mountain, Ben Nevis Distillery was founded by 'Long' John McDonald and stayed in the McDonald family until the 1940s. It was then that Joseph Hobbs took over the distillery and revamped production by installing a Coffey still allowing them to experiment in both grain and malt whiskies. The distillery was bought by Nikka in 1989 and about three-quarters of its output goes to Nikka and other outputs, which is why the majority of standout Ben Nevis bottlings are from independent bottlers.
