Description

After being founded by John Duff & Co in 1897, the distillery was mothballed for 65 years with only its floor maltings being used for the Longmorn distillery next door. After experiencing great success under the ownership of Billy Walker and his partners, it won Distillery of the Year from Malt Advocate magazine in 2007 and has received rave reviews for its peated and un-peated expressions alike.

Nose: Honey, vanilla, floral, fruity with well-balanced wood overtones, ripe orchard fruit, vanilla cream, gentle floral sweetness, warm hints of toffee and toasted oak.
Palate: Rounded, medium to full-bodied, rich honey, vanilla, cream, spice, chocolate, green apple, soft caramel, gentle warming spice, pleasing smoothness and balance.
Finish: Extraordinarily long and lingering with sweet, rich fruit, clean, medium-length, gently warming, lingering vanilla, dried fruit, and a touch of sweet oak.

The spice sounds like a supporting note rather than the main event here. Gentle warming spice sits alongside rich honey, vanilla and soft caramel, which suits my preference for spice that has some sweetness around it. Green apple gives that richer side a bit of contrast, while chocolate adds another layer without pulling the palate away from its rounded feel. The nose takes a softer route through ripe orchard fruit and vanilla cream, with toasted oak alongside them. Vanilla, dried fruit and sweet oak carry the same balance into the finish. For my taste, the appeal is how comfortably the spice fits with the sweeter flavours, rather than any one note trying to take over.
