Description

A malt distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland, Benromach is owned and operated by Speymalt Whisky Distributors (aka Gordon & MacPhail). The company acquired it from United Distillers in 1993 and launched its now highly-regarded single malt brand shortly afterwards. This Benromach 1974 Single Cask is a rare, limited edition bottling, distilled in 1974 and bottled in 2016 after 41 years of maturation in a single sherry butt. It comes presented in a stylish decanter-style bottle alongside a presentation case and a book about Benromach's history. Only 452 bottles were produced from cask #1583.

Nose
Rich and complex, with opulent sherry influences, plump sultanas, dried apricot, green apple, and zesty orange peel. Notes of toasted malt, honey, nuts, and baking spices like cinnamon, star anise, and clove are present, alongside hints of beeswax polish, menthol, dark chocolate, gingerbread, and liquorice. There are also aromas of polished furniture, old leather, and a delicate earthy peat smoke.
Palate
Viscous and well-balanced, offering refined maltiness, golden syrup, and a mix of fresh and dried fruits like sultana, raisin, green apple, and caramelised banana. Dark chocolate, baking spices (cinnamon, mace, liquorice root), and a gentle earthy peat smoke are evident. There are also notes of polished wood, tangerines, herbal honey, and a touch of peppery oak with ginger.
Finish
Long and luxurious, with a combination of sweet and spicy elements, including cinnamon, dark chocolate, and ginger. Bittersweet oak and a delicate, soft peat smoke linger, alongside notes of espresso and nutty undertones.
