Description

Gordon & MacPhail have experienced such success with Benromach since they took over the practically derelict distillery in 1993, that in 2016 nine new washbacks were installed, increasing the potential capacity of the distillery to seven hundred thousand litres per annum. While this might sound like small potatoes compared to some of the Speyside titans, it shows remarkable confidence in the rejuv .... This is a limited release in the Contrasts range, using Cara Gold malted barley and lightly peated malt, matured in first-fill bourbon barrels.

The Bourbon Cask reference gives a clear point of interest, but the appeal here is the contrast in the notes rather than any assumed cask signature. Passion fruit, lychee, and lime keep the nose bright; pineapple and apricot meet pepper on the palate, before roasted malt and salted caramel butter add a more savoury turn. The smooth smoky finish gives that fruit-led character a welcome edge. It sounds varied without losing its focus.
