Description

Black Bull Kyloe Peated is a blended Scotch whisky, made up of 50% malt and 50% grain whiskies. It's a blend of single malts from Highland and Speyside, with rich, intense and smoky flavours of Islay and the West Coast of Scotland. It is non-chill filtered and bottled at 50% ABV. The Kyloe name is inspired by the hardy breed of Highland cattle, known for its resilience.

Nose: warm peat smoke and old leather, with heavily roasted malt and burnt oak - some vanilla and dried herbs
Palate: soft peat smoke and dark malt tones - above all sweet waffles with syrup, behind which are slightly fruity hints of ripe pears and apples
Finish: long finish - again the peat smoke and the leather - plus a mix of spice and fruit

The combination of soft peat smoke and dark malt has a clear centre of gravity, while the syrupy waffle note and ripe fruit offer a gentler counterpoint. I’m more persuaded by that contrast than by smoke alone. Old leather and burnt oak suggest a drier, more assertive edge, so this may feel less focused on malt sweetness than the palate’s waffles imply. Still, the malt seems to have a meaningful role rather than simply sitting behind the peat.
