Description

A distillery with a turbulent history, punctuated by numerous ownership changes. It is currently part of the Pure Scot Ltd holdings of Australian entrepreneur and yoghurt mogul, David Prior. Although historically operated for the provision of blends, it is now focussed on its single malt brand. This is the eleventh installment in the Whiskyland series from independent bottler Decadent Drinks, featuring a 35-year-old Bladnoch single malt distilled in 1990 and matured in a refill bourbon barrel.

Nose: Seductive, rounded and buttery with vanilla, pastry, sweet apricots, polished furniture, chalk, linseed, light tobacco leaves, sweet lemons, custard, honey, and exotic fruits.
Palate: Crystallised fruits, citrus, grass, buttery notes, deeper spices, waxes, a whirlwind of tiny herbs, honeysuckle, yellow plums, lime, leather, mineral oils, ginger, and citrus zest.
Finish: Long and lemony, with honey, sweet grass, and drying oaky notes.

The oak seems to sit more at the edges than lead the whole picture: polished furniture on the nose, then drying oak at the finish. That fits the brighter fruit, citrus and buttery notes, though it sounds more like a supporting thread than an oak-led whisky.

Vanilla, pastry, apricot and honey make for a generous sweet opening, but this is not simply a sugar parade. Citrus, grass and deeper spices bring welcome counterweight, while the palate’s waxes and mineral oils add a more savoury edge. The long, lemony finish keeps that balance going, with sweet grass and drying oak rather than an endlessly sugary fade. A layered, warmly appealing character, with enough contrast to keep the sweeter notes interesting.
