Description

The oldest operational distillery on the isle of Islay, built in 1779. Today it is part of the Suntory Group, having been acquired by the Japanese company in 1994. Under their ownership it has been nurtured into one of the most collectable names in Scotch whisky. This is an independent bottling by Decadent Drinks under their Whisky Sponge label, part of the Islay Sponge series. It was distilled in 2004 and matured for 20 years in a refill hogshead before being bottled in 2024 at cask strength.

Nose
Incredibly fresh, fruity and vibrant with sharp exotic fruit notes, citrus, beach pebbles, foamy rock pools, and crisp, fragrant peat smoke. Also hints of charred lemon peel, rock pools, wet pebbles, distant medicinal peat, plasticine, jammy apricots, orange marmalade, nori, honey, and vanilla.
Palate
Stunning arrival, dominated by tropical, green and citrus fruits, bound by seashore freshness and dry, peppery peat smoke. Syrupy mouthfeel with notes of charcoal, salinity, vibrant lemon, lychees, pineapples, ash, honey dew melon, tinned peaches, oatcakes drizzled with honey, suede shoe, smouldering logs on a beach bonfire, and oysters.
Finish
Long, crisp, peaty, salty, with dead exotic fruitiness recalling old 1970s Laphroaigs. Lingering citrus, gentle bonfire smoke, and grapefruit.
