Description

A storied distillery in the Sutherland area of Scotland. Despite having closed in 1983, it developed cult status for the high quality single malt it had produced, particularly a peated style between 1969 and 1973. Such was its popularity, it was eventually rebuilt by Diageo and opened again in 2021.

Nose
Superlatively complex with sweet-savoury vegetal character (artichoke, roasted brussels sprouts, fried onions), lemon drops, tangerine peel, key lime zest, crisp sweet apples, honey, smooth maplewood smoke, steely, industrial, basalt gravel, birch bark, seashore, grilled trout, buttered sourdough, tobacco, woody spice, walnut, baking chocolate, jasmine, peppermint, dandelions, habanero, Darjeeling tea, half-rotted wooden furniture, and mossy rainforest floor.
Palate
Medium-light, very slightly oily. Arrives with lime, paraffin, sunflower seeds, honey, developing to barnyard, hay, peat, graphite, fired clay. More peat, subtle and silky smoke, earthy and carbolic. Deep barley sugar, peanut brittle, orchard fruits, honey, and underlying saltiness.
Finish
Medium-long with lingering peat. Earthy notes of wet stones, nori, toasted celery, citrus peels, nectarine, pears, honey, and rosehips.
