Description

The fourth release in Bruichladdich's enigmatic Black Art series, this 23-year-old single malt was distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2013. Crafted by Master Distiller Jim McEwan, the exact cask composition remains a closely guarded secret, though it is known to have matured in a variety of American and European oak wine casks. This unpeated Islay whisky, bottled at 49.2% ABV, is non-chill filtered and free from artificial coloring. Only 6000 bottles were produced for this limited edition release.

Nose
An unusual bouquet with hints of sherry, Bordeaux and Sauternes wine, fresh lemon peel, honey, and a slight salt air. Rich, fudgy aromatics of chocolate, coffee, and tobacco give way to tropical fruits like coconut, mango, and guava. Also notes of red wine vinegar, apricots, cocoa powder, red currant jelly, dried prunes, leather, Turkish delight, marzipan, oak, melons, candle wax, and fresh cut green branches.
Palate
Exotic with abundant fruit notes, including fresh papaya, coconut, chocolate, mango, and star anise. Initially thin mouthfeel, then raspberry jam, thyme, fennel seeds, fresh coriander, a touch of salt, and a drizzle of molasses. Evolves to rye bread, roasted almond marzipan, red wine sauce, prunes in Armagnac, and some dried mushrooms. Baking spices like nutmeg and anise, pear, sherry, spicy chocolate, and fresh cracked black pepper are also present.
Finish
Long and elegant, with notes of oak, cereal grains, and peach crisp. Lingers on dark sherry elements, molasses, sulfur, prunes, wet oak, cloves, and camphor, with a hint of Campari and a bitter herb feeling. Grilled peach and apricot sprinkled with demerara sugar, fresh baked pear, and cinnamon. An earthy side is also noted.
