Description

Established as Speciality Drinks in 1999, Elixir Distillers was set up by brothers Sukhinder and Raj Singh who are also known for founding the online spirits retail site the Whisky Exchange. The independent bottlers have several ranges including the Single Malts of Scotland, Elements of Islay, and Port Askaig. The Elements range draws its inspiration from traditional medical laboratory labels and packaging, with bottles resembling 'pharmacy' style. This Oc5 release is a single malt from Islay, distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2018 from a single bourbon barrel at cask strength of 59.8% ABV. It is a heavily peated expression, characteristic of Islay whiskies. [cite: Scotch Whisky Auctions, 4, 10, 12]

Nose
Multi-layered with malty cereal, wet straw, peaty smoke, juicy fruit-salad notes of grapes and oranges, soot, ink, mezcal, hot engines, earthy peat, olives, carbon papers, BBQ roasted pineapple, and honeyed cereal.
Palate
Fruity notes mingle with nuts, toffee, and cereal before an explosion of fierce, briny, smoky peat. Mineral-rich smoke with sea salt, Lapsang Souchong, mezcal, hot peppers, lemons, sweet barley, and caramel coated peanuts.
Finish
Long, ashy, with burnt oak, oatcakes, minerals, wisps of smoke from a wood-burning stove, and a hint of baked apple and white grape.
