Description

A rare opportunity to taste heavily peated single malt from Bunnahabhain distillery. Distilled in 2009 on the northernmost corner of Islay, the whisky aged in a refill sherry barrel before being finished in a single sauternes barrique. This is a limited release of just 281 bottles by independent bottler Ferg and Harris. Notes of bonfire and salted caramel. This spirit melds continental sweetness with local smokiness and salt, presenting sharp, fumy aromas from a heavily peated Bunnahabhain expression, allied to a treacly touch from its sherry and Sauternes embraces. Initially matured in a second-fill Oloroso hogshead, it was finished in a Sauternes barrique for three months.

Nose
Sharp, smoky aromas reminiscent of a coastal smokehouse, followed by maple-glazed smoky bacon, roasted nuts, and an inviting layer of warm spices. A smoky wee beast with drifting campfire smoke, toasted marshmallows, and waxy honey.
Palate
Deeply savoury with layers of sweet smoke, roasted nuts, maple syrup, and an alluring spiciness. Complexity balanced by rich, sweet undertones of the Sauternes cask. Fair amounts of ashy smoke, burning wood, lemon, pine trees, honey, vanilla, and white sponge.
Finish
Ends quickly but distinctly, leaving a salty, syrupy sweetness that evokes the maritime spirit of its coastal home. Lingering smoke and a slight liquorice note alongside the vanilla.
