Description

This thirty-four-year old grain whisky came to be at the Caledonian Distillery in 1987, on the very year that the distillery shut its doors. It's been resting for thirty-four years, before being bottled by Duncan Taylor as part of the Rare Auld Grain series.

Nose
Unmistakably a classic older grain whisky, with vanilla, coconut, and a touch of fresh oak sawdust. Ripe yellow plums and red toffee apple are also present. A touch of buttery lemon, chopped fresh coriander and a hint of tamarind, offset the sweetness. All very well-balanced and inviting.
Palate
The fruits of the nose persist on the palate. This time more on green fruits, apple, honeydew melon, and a hint of unripe green banana. Some spun sugar, but the sweetness is not cloying and all is balanced by a ripple of soft oaky spice, with coriander seed and gentle pepper.
Finish
Full, long and lingering. Pears poached in sweet white wine, sweet and buttery apple pastries baked with almond paste. Again some soft herbal spice cuts through the sweetness and makes the whole wonderfully appealing.
