Description

By volume the largest single malt producer on the isle of Islay, Caol Ila is part of Diageo's Scotch whisky holdings. This 33-year-old Caol Ila was distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2023 as part of the Rambler series by Loża Dżentelmenów, a Polish independent whisky company established in 2009 by Artur Brzychcy. The whisky was initially matured in a Bourbon Hogshead cask and then transferred to a second-fill Ex-Caol Ila Oloroso Octave cask for finishing.

Nose
Pleasantly smoky, cigar-like, turning into ash with charred oak and damp earth. Clear ash notes along with maritime influences and wet, moss-covered stones. Buttery notes reminiscent of burnt toast with butter. Bourbon sweetness with vanilla and caramel, slightly burnt and salty. Creamy notes and wax. Red fruits, strawberries in ashes, canned peaches and apricots, overcooked compote fruits. Traces of cloves, lemon pepper, allspice, and slightly herbal notes.
Palate
Buttery notes disappear, vanilla sweetness turns into vanilla pod, and caramel is more burnt. Herbal accents, a bit of citrus and trace amounts of tropical fruits like grapefruits, lemon peels, and overcooked fruit. A bit of blackcurrant tartness, drying the palate. Later, a combination of raisin and plum notes with very dark chocolate.
Finish
Cigar aftertaste, dry, ashy, and earthy. Notes of oak and walnuts. Mustiness, burnt caramel, red apples in ash. Leather, salt, waxiness, and bee pollen. Spices include nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. A slightly bitter aftertaste lingers, stone-like, like walnut skin or tobacco leaves.
