Description

By volume the largest single malt producer on the isle of Islay, Caol Ila is part of the extensive Scotch whisky holdings of Diageo. This 2006 vintage, bottled in 2017, is part of 'The Distillers Edition' series and has undergone double maturation, with a finishing period in Moscatel casks, lending a ripe, fruity sweetness to its distinctive smoky, ashy character.

Nose
Peat and fruits, warm and sweet herbal and earthy peatiness with hay, honey, green grapes, green apples, yellow pears, a perfumey note, and a funky complex note. The Moscatel finish comes through the heavy peat, with gentle peat smoke, subtle bright fruit notes, and hints of oak and seaweed.
Palate
Starts mild with a fruity mix and a sour tang, followed by a dusty oak note, maltiness, and a sweet chili-like spiciness. Peat covers the palate, allowing other flavors like ashes, warm campfire smoke, hay, and ripe grape notes to shine. Earthy peat, oatcakes, mango chutney, maple syrup, and dates are also present.
Finish
Spicy transition, dry soil with white wine, smokiness like burning yellow grass, and a dusty note. The funky ripe note reappears, with oak bringing tropical fruitiness and a slight oak note with a peaty cover. Apricot, smoke, orange oil, menthol, and sea salt contribute to a long, smooth, and smoky finish with faint underlying Muscat and oak notes.
