Nose
Starts on slightly overripe oranges and passion fruits plus a very distinct muskiness and even hints of foundation cream. Also a lot of honey and beeswax, whiffs of peat and a rather unusual floweriness. Orange peel, honey and a floral sweetness, dusty wood and paraffin, with apricot and marmalade developing.
Palate
Perfect attack, spicy, a tad oriental, rather peatier than the 'average' 1972 Clynelish. Lemon juice, greenness (rhubarb, sorrel, grass) and the expected waxy/honeyed combo. With water, fruitier and more honeyed. Has a bite, with fruit and honey, becoming brighter (lemon) and more tropical (mango) with time. Apricot, orange, peach, and more honey with water.
Finish
Long and firmer, more on pepper and ginger. Definitely spicier and beautifully so. Bitter almonds and pu-erh tea in the aftertaste. Rather long, more on waxy spices – or spicy wax – and a little mustard.
