Nose
Nosing from a careful distance, there is still considerable astringency, but there is also an oak note along with caramel, vanilla, toffee, and the impression of a fruit basket.
Palate
The rum enters with ample heat and spice, but is quickly followed by toast slathered with butter and jam. There is also a tannic presence that quickly coats the mid-palate, which is coupled with a saccharin bitterness.
Finish
A bit of red pepper and pencil shavings the latter of which dominates on the finish. Combined with some water, the fruitiness comes to the fore, showing orange, lemon and grapefruit.
