Description
Cutty Sark's genesis was a lunch attended by Francis Berry, Hugh Rudd (the partners of Berry Bros. & Rudd) and artist James McBey - who suggested the name. The lighter style was created for the American market, which at the time was still in the grip of Prohibition. The first Scotch whisky to sell 1 million cases in the USA, its distinctive yellow label was initially a printer's error. The Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition is a tribute to Captain William McCoy, who famously smuggled Cutty Sark blended Scotch whisky into America during the Prohibition era of the 1920s. This special edition was released in 2013 to celebrate Cutty Sark's 90th birthday and 80 years since the repeal of American Prohibition. It is bottled at 50% ABV, reflecting the higher strength whiskies popular during that period.
