Description

A bottle of Foursquare Magisterium 16 Year Old Fine Barbados Single Blended Rum. This rum was distilled in 2008 and matured for 16 years in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, then bottled at a cask strength of 58% ABV and released in March 2024 as part of the Exceptional Cask Selection Mark XXVI. It is a blend of three distinct 16-year-old rums, distilled using both a copper double-retort pot still and a continuous twin column Coffey still. Two of the components underwent a double maturation process: one aged initially in ex-bourbon casks for 3 years before spending 13 years in ex-Oloroso sherry barrels, and another aged 9 years in ex-bourbon followed by 7 years in ex-Oloroso sherry. The third rum matured entirely in ex-bourbon casks for 16 years. All aging, blending, and bottling occur on-site in Barbados, with no added sugar, color, or filtration.

A warm and inviting mix of caramelized orange peel, toasted coconut, and passionfruit, with hints of candied nuts, cedar, and a touch of sea breeze. Further notes of baking spices, nutmeg, turmeric, dark chocolate, leather, vanilla wafer, fudge, banana, raisins, sultanas, mango, orange, coffee, dates, cotton candy, butterscotch, and raw pastry dough.
Palate
Rich and full-bodied, featuring dark cocoa, hazelnut, and orange zest, with a savory mid-draw cigar note and subtle blueberry tones, balanced by sherry-induced depth. Also presents a medium oily mouthfeel, dark chocolate, toasted coconut, leather, vanilla wafer, caramel, toffee, vanilla, dates, raisins, cherries, pineapple, cooked blackberries, cinnamon, and mocha.
Finish
Long and dry, with pronounced oak and a lingering warmth, accented by traces of spiced fruit and a faint peppery kick. Notes of toasted coconut, vanilla chai, leather, nutmeg, turmeric, tannic, metallic, sweet toasted oak, cardboard, peanuts, dark chocolate, pastry, coffee, tobacco, dried fruits, citrus fruits, pineapple, prunes, orange zest, cinnamon, and blackberries.
