Description

A historic Highland malt distillery and one of the oldest still operating in Scotland. Established in the heart of Old Meldrum back in 1797, it is today part of the Beam Suntory portfolio and produces a non-peated spirit which is entirely reserved for its single malt brand. Maltiply Tasting Profile
Nose
Old bottle sherry cask, with a very 1950s burnt wax signature on the nose, together with quite a bit of fruitiness with green apples and orange marmalade. Hint of peat and quite fresh and mineral-y. Toasted cereal grains, honey, hit of ginger and white pepper, and something floral. A prolonged sniffing session reveals this as orange blossom.
Palate
Burnt wax and peat, citrus bitterness, hint of honey and some gentle spices.
Finish
Peat and white pepper, with the pepper dominant down the gullet, and a dry bitterness on the inner cheeks. The peat is a very gentle very highland peat, with an almost vegetal quality, and that ever present burnt wax.

The finish sounds like the main event here: gentle Highland peat, white pepper, dry bitterness and burnt wax, with pepper taking the lead. I like that it has a clear shape rather than simply fading out; citrus bitterness and a hint of honey give the palate another side to it.

There’s a lovely contrast here: orange marmalade and green apple on the nose meet burnt wax, while the palate turns more bitter and gently spiced. The peat is described as light and distinctly Highland in character, rather than taking over. At 40% ABV, the bottling has a measured strength, and the notes suggest plenty of character without leaning on high proof. A distinctive old Highland single malt, with the wax and citrus combination doing the most to set it apart.
