Description

This 40 year old single malt from Glenfiddich's Rare Collection is produced using a unique 'remnant vatting' process, where a portion of previous 40 Year Old bottlings is married with new casks selected by the Malt Master. Glenfiddich claims to be the only distillery to use such a process, creating a complex and layered whisky. Less than 1,000 bottles are released worldwide each year, with each bottle individually numbered. The whisky is aged for 40 years in oak casks. It has received multiple awards, including 'Best of the Best' by Whisky Magazine in 2003, and trophies at the ISC and IWSC in 2008.

That lingering finish of sweet spice, chocolate, mint and faint peat smoke is the draw here. It sounds long and layered, while the dryish oak and bitter chocolate keep the rich dried-fruit character from reading as all sweetness.

The dried-fruit and Christmas-cake sweetness has plenty of company here: bitter chocolate and dryish oak bring a welcome counterpoint, while roasted coffee and faint smoke add depth. That balance keeps the sweeter notes from taking over, which is appealing for a whisky built around rich fruit. The palate sounds silky and full, though the long, complex finish may make this a more layered style than a straightforward sweet dram.
