Description

The Glenglassaugh distillery has had a turbulent history since being founded by James Moir in 1873; opening and closing no less than 7 times in 125 years. Always popular with blenders, single malt releases were limited for most of its very irregular working life. Currently owned by the BenRiach Distillery Company, which purchased the distillery in 2013, the distillery's focus is now firmly on the production of single malt. This 1986 vintage release is part of Glenglassaugh's first batch of rare cask releases. It was distilled on February 19, 1986, and spent 28 years in a hogshead before being bottled in February 2014.

The fruit character gives this whisky its appeal for me: the orchard fruits on the palate develop toward dried apricot, while soaked raisins and sultanas bring a darker note on the nose. Toasted oak spice and warm cigar-box spices add structure, though the overall description remains gentle rather than forceful. The vanilla carries through to a long, subtle finish. A composed, fruit-led character, with enough spice to keep it from feeling one-dimensional.
