Description

Although Direct Wines are the world's largest mail-order wine retailer operating in the UK, France and the New World regions, the company also provides independent whisky bottlings. The most well-known of their ranges is perhaps the First Cask series showcasing single cask whiskies bottled at 46% ABV from a wide variety of distilleries. This 25 year old Speyside single malt Scotch whisky was produced at the Glentauchers distillery on 11th March 1981 and bottled in 2006 for the First Cask range from Direct Wines Ltd. Glentauchers is a Speyside distillery known for producing a delicate, fruity, and floral single malt, often used in blends like Ballantine's.

The nose brings citrus, sweet fruits and nuts, while the palate’s sweet malty edge gives this a clear point of appeal. The finish is the most persuasive detail: it’s described as good and long, with good mouth-feel, so the whisky’s appeal rests on a lingering close rather than a quick fade. This is a warmly positive combination, especially for someone who values a finish that lasts.

That sweet malty edge is the part that stands out to me, with citrus, sweet fruits and nuts adding a bit of contrast. The long finish and good mouth-feel make this sound like a nicely rounded Speyside single malt.

The bourbon cask is a helpful point of context for this 25-year-old single malt, while the described character stays focused on fruit, nuts and malt rather than making a specific cask-flavour claim. Citrus, sweet fruits and nuts give the nose some variety, followed by a sweet malty edge on the palate. The reported long finish and good mouth-feel make this sound nicely rounded. I find that clear, gentle progression appealing.

Citrus, sweet fruits and nuts lead into a sweet malty palate, which sounds more appealing to me than a smoke-led style. The long finish and good mouth-feel are a plus, though the notes give little detail beyond that.
