Description

This Hazelburn was distilled in 2007 and matured in a re-charred hogshead for 12 years. First distilled in 1997, Hazelburn is the triple distilled single malt produced at Springbank distillery, and is named after the distillery of the same name, mothballed in 1925. Although very popular, Hazelburn remains an elusive whisky. Like Longrow, their peated single malt, it makes up 10% of the annual production at Springbank each year, resulting in around 100 to 150 casks.

Nose
Quite heavy, creamy, loads of sweetness from vanilla and a strawberry note, hints of oregano and orange peel, a touch of ginger, custard and crisp slight burnt butter dough with the cask char also showing itself. A few drops of water brings out some flour/freshly made baking dough.
Palate
Thick and creamy arrival. Dark honey, overripe banana, loads of caramel notes (Créme Brûlée), hints of cloves, and some delicious but unrecognizable fruity notes.
Finish
Medium length, warming, a slight but enjoyable "chalkiness" found in Springbank whiskies, sour green apples, banana, brine, vanilla, a touch of peat, and an umami note.
