Description

For a period, Campbeltown was the undisputed Whisky Capital of the World, boasting over 30 distilleries operating simultaneously at its peak. Locally available peat, barley and coal, coupled with a quick steamship service to Glasgow meant this thriving industry lasted into the early 20th Century. Alas; ultimately (and perhaps inevitably) it proved unsustainable, and by 1935 the bubble had well and burst. This Hazelburn 2007 13 Year Old Oloroso Cask is a single malt Scotch whisky, triple-distilled at the Springbank distillery. It was matured for 13 years in Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 50.3% ABV. It is non-chill filtered and has natural coloring.

Nose
Juicy red grapes, raspberries and redcurrants followed by stewed strawberries and mint humbugs. Gently nutty, with some toffee, shortbread biscuits and a hint of nectarine. Dried fruits, such as raisins and figs. A hint of plums. Oranges.
Palate
Initially a rich sweetness of marzipan, prunes and raisins, developing into orange rind, dark chocolate and vanilla cheesecake. Sultanas, figs and sea salt. Plums, a hint of leather, plenty of tobacco. Some lovely bitter dark chocolate. Orange peels and cranberries.
Finish
Red apple, digestive biscuits, wholemeal toast, black cherries and almonds. Mid-long to long and somewhat dry. Cranberries and a balsamic note. A hint of oak, tobacco leaves and spices. Malt, leather and wood spice.
