Description

One of Scotland's best-known blended Scotch brands and the flagship whisky property of drinks giant, Diageo. It was introduced in 1867 by John Walker & Sons and its range is headed up by its Red Label and smoky Black Label blends, and its premium Blue Label offerings. John Walker & Sons is a dormant subsidiary of the global drinks giant, Diageo, and its Johnnie Walker whiskies are its sales-leading brand. This 1930s bottling of the 12 Year Old Black Label is an amazing piece of whisky history, bottled for markets like the US just a few years after the end of prohibition.

Nose
Immediate spiritiness: floor varnish, grain, chalks. Pale and washy with woody varnish and alcohol notes. Very wan caramel appears alongside the wood and a rinse of pale spices.
Palate
Surprise smoke! Charred lemon flesh, burning cordite, some copper parts, and sooty machinery. Coal smoke out of a 1930's steam engine. Smoke vanishes quickly, replaced by tired, dusty raisins, hot metals, and bitter clench of tannins. Weak caramel sauce watered down with young grain alcohol.
Finish
More varnishes and polishes, now-distant soot, and the tacky acridity of burnt caramel. Quickly fades, leaving bitter pith, rinds, and stems.
