Description

The Karuizawa 1984 Single Cask #4021 is a Japanese Single Malt Whisky distilled in 1984 and bottled in 2012 by Number One Drinks Company. This 28-year-old expression, from a first-fill sherry cask, was part of the Carpe Koï Serie and was an exclusive release for The Whisky Exchange. Karuizawa, a now-closed distillery located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, was known for its traditional production methods, including the use of imported Scottish barley and maturation in sherry casks. This particular single cask bottling showcases the distillery's characteristic intense and complex profile, bottled at a cask strength of 64.5% ABV.

Nose
Very savoury with soot & smoke, menthol, bandagey, complex, dark Dundee cake, molasses, dried autumn leaves, old, soft leather. Also light fruit notes with malt and spice.
Palate
Massive entry, dusty, earthy, rich, savoury rather than sweet, dried fruits, molasses, dry smoke, prunes. Hot, Christmas cake, all-spice, ginger, cinnamon. Subtle but clearly present earthy peat. Drier, more floral, herbal notes, faint bitterness of dark chocolate, dry oak.
Finish
Long, spicy, smooth. Very long, dry, slightly herbal and oaky, with a warming end. Brambles and cocoa powder, some tannins.
