Description

Kavalan Distillery was founded in 2005 on an idea of taking Scottish methods of making whisky and importing that expertise to Taiwan for a wholly-owned Taiwanese distillery. After a great deal of research investment, the fruits of their labour were finally brought to the world with the first spirit being produced in March of the following year. The distillery is situated in the north-east of Taiwan. This limited edition release celebrates the distillery's 10th Anniversary and is matured in Bordeaux Pauillac wine casks.

Sumptuous ripened fruits of the forest, delicious toffee apple, gentle cumin, coriander, pepper spices, blackcurrants, strawberries, blueberries, fresh cut apples, salami, clove, cranberry, hawthorn, allspice, tobacco, graphite sticks, smoked meat, and a beautiful wine influence.
Palate
Creamy vanilla, tropical fruits, toffee, coriander seeds, spicy clove and pepper, citrus fruit, berries, orchard fruit, and soft fruits drizzled with toffee.
Finish
Red berries, black pepper, tropical fruit bomb with a long but drying finish, tobacco, tea, spicy, peppery, and lingering vanilla.

The fruit and creamy vanilla make for an appealing combination, with spice adding some contrast. The long, drying finish sounds less soft than the palate, but it keeps this from feeling one-note.

The named Bordeaux Pauillac wine cask gives this single malt a clear point of interest, and the notes explicitly describe a wine influence alongside ripe berries and toffee apple. On the palate, creamy vanilla and tropical fruit meet coriander, clove and pepper, so the fruit is not simply sweet or soft. The long, drying finish sounds like a useful counterweight, with red berries, tea and lingering vanilla. That combination makes for an engaging, layered character, though the drying edge may not suit everyone.
