Description

Kim Chang-soo "Gimpo" Korean Single Malt First Edition (2024) is a rare inaugural release from one of Korea's pioneering whisky makers. Bottled at cask strength (50.1% ABV), it is crafted from both non-peated Golden Promise malt and peated malt, matured for just over three years in a mix of nine casks including Oloroso and PX sherry, Bordeaux wine, and American and European oak in various sizes.

Nose
Smouldering damp firewood lead to singed raisins, Crunchie bars and hints of olive brine. Darker forest floor, notes develop, with anise, tar and freshly unwrapped bandages. Dark chocolate, mint fondant and dried lime peel bring up the rear. Also, sweet charcoal smoke, honey, teriyaki glaze, mesquite BBQ sauce.
Palate
Rich raisins and glacé cherries, dark fruit cake, singed raisins, mint, tar, dark and savoury mint chocolate chip. Mulchy leaves and riverbank earth, dark and spicy peat smoke. Smokiness and sweet umami savouriness of teriyaki glaze, honey BBQ ribs, char siu meats or Thai moo ping meat skewers.
Finish
Blackcurrant jam, dates, red grapes, squishy chocolate cookies, smouldering leaves and rich earth.
