Description

Connoisseurs Choice is one of the most easily recognised ranges from the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail. This range was launched by George Urquhart - one of the first of four generations of the family to build Gordon & MacPhail - back in the 1960s; a period where most malts were used in blends so this was quite an unusual move for the company. A 2001 Ledaig single malt from independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail that was matured in a refill sherry butt for two decades, before being bottled in May 2022 as part of its Connoisseurs Choice series.

Nose
Bright apple and autumnal spice aromas give way to brown sugar. Cooked apple with sweet cinnamon and sprinklings of muscovado, smoky barley, and flamed orange peels.
Palate
Stewed red fruit flavours lead to cocoa powder and orange zest. Dense toffee and bittersweet cacao tangle, while sweet berry compote and candied citrus build beside hints of liquorice and murmurs of peat. White pepper and stewed red fruit leads to charred oak. Summer berries come to the fore alongside cocoa powder and orange zest.
Finish
Full spicy finish with smoke, aniseed and toffee. The spice arrives on the finish, with warming baking spice and woody clove. A touch of anise creeps in, while tarry smoke rests on silken caramel.
