Description

Founded by Angus MacRaild and Iain McClune in 2018, Decadent Drinks are now a very well-known Independent Bottler in the whisky world. They came about due to the experimental works with independent bottlings which got out of hand, resulting in them now becoming an incredibly busy, popular company! Angus is also the creative force behind the Whisky Sponge brand, and is responsible for selecting the. This is a heavily peated single malt from Loch Lomond, distilled in 2005 and aged for 19 years in a single first fill bourbon barrel, bottled at natural cask strength with natural colour and non-chill filtration.

Maltiply Tasting Profile

Nose: Some pleasant notes of bung cloth, damp oak and tar, alongside wood smoke and a hint of charred pineapple. Also slivers of cigar boxes, tobacco leaves and a touch of sage.
Palate: Lovely oily texture with subtle stone fruits in the background, while notes of fresh asphalt, pink peppercorns and coastal notes form the backbone of this dram. Well, did I say coastal?
Finish: Long with some gentle wood spices, herbs and diesel notes. A hint of resin too.

There’s a lot going on here, and it stays fairly restrained despite the bold mix of smoke, tar and industrial notes. Damp oak and gentle wood spices give the more unusual asphalt and diesel character something familiar to lean on, while stone fruit sits quietly in the background. The oily texture sounds appealing, but this is clearly an individual style rather than an easy, fruit-led Highland malt. I’d put it in the interesting, not especially comforting, category.
