Description

Starting life as a brewery, Lochside was converted into a distillery 200 years later and both grain and malt whiskies were distilled on site. The distillery's output was mostly used for the blended whisky Sandy McNab's and then for Spanish blended whisky when DYC took over in the 1970s. In 1992 the Distillery was mothballed and the buildings were demolished in 2005. This is a 'single blend' where both grain and malt were produced at Lochside and blended before ageing, maturing in the same cask for 46 years. Bottled for The Whisky Exchange.

Nose
Sweet, green leaves, fresh, aloe, soft and nuanced, faintly floral, candy floss, growing fruitier as it opened, joined by caramel, and then behind came a creamy nutty nougat. As it further evolved, the aromas shifted into strawberries and cream, topping a fluffy angel food cake; tropical fruit galore: pineapple, mango, passion fruit, tangerine.
Palate
Prickly initially, then strawberries, warm, gentle, and utterly lovely. Still quite a “grainy” profile. Green banana, coconut, papaya. Also pink grapefruit and tangerine. Oak as well, with a faint bitterness.
Finish
Incredibly long, simply stunning. Still very fruity, grainy and slightly floral. Lingering finish with notes of vanilla, caramel, cocoa, coconut flakes, orange peel, cinnamon, pepper, tobacco and oak.
